About This Game KNIGHTS and MERCHANTS recreates the era of the Middle Ages. Apart from the purely fictitious geography of our world, all game elements and scenes are based on the Anglo-Saxon period, 1200 A.D. And we haven't used imaginary elements like fabled creatures, either. The player takes on the role of an ordinary captain in the Palace Guard. A conspiracy against the king catapults the captain into a situation where he finds himself responsible for the defence of the last royal province. This is all that remains of the shattered kingdom, which has been split into numerous small principalities and fiefdoms. And now even the king himself, ensconced in his capital, is threatened by enemy armies. This is the starting point of your Middle Ages adventure. BIG LETDOWN. I get that this game is much older than Age of Mythology, but it certainly hasn't aged well. Not only are the graphics extremely bad (yes, I know there's an HD version and I'll get to that) but the gameplay is crap and so is the tutorial.So let's start with graphics. Yes, I understand this game is ancient. I understand the graphics might be a bit sub-par. There's literally 2 resolution options, that's it. As I said before, I know there's an HD version. I tried it but it stretched itself across both of my monitors and not only that, it was only the top-left corner of the display that was stretched across both monitors. I was literally missing about 3\/4 of the display. I went on the forums and one of the most recent non-pinned posts was about this FROM 11 MONTHS AGO! No response from the devs, no fix since I experienced it too! Clearly the devs have abandoned this game.Next up is the gameplay. Holy freaking crap is it slow. Again, I get that this game is extremely old, but it literally takes like 2 minutes REAL-TIME to construct a school house (which took me even longer to figure out how to do btw, more on that later) which is one of the first buildings you can make! Watching my troops move, I felt like I could see "ticks" because they moved so slowly, as in they moved so slowly it was almost laggy\/jerky.Now on to the tutorial. In most games you expect pop-ups to help you through the tutorial and teach you about the game. Not so here. It took me 10 minutes in the tutorial just to discover that the little paper things off to the left are the instructions and that you have to click each one. At first I thought the tutorial didn't even HAVE instructions! Whoever thought that was a good idea needs to be shackled in the town square AND tarred and feathered.Finally the troop movements. Now it might have been in the tutorial clicky papers, but I didn't bother reading them all when I discovered how bad this game really was. However, I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get my units to move anywhere. I tried moving my serfs, my laborers and some of my infantry. Nothing. Nada. Can't left-click or right-click to move them. Arrow keys just move the screen. No way to move them that I could see. No option for it that I found in the unit menu. So I guess they're supposed to sit around on their butts and wait for the enemy to come to them. Brilliant.In conclusion, if you played it back in the day and know how everything works, I guess you could pick it up for nostalgia's sake. However if you've never played it before, I'd steer clear. There are better games like this out there like Age of Mythology and Banished. I got this half off (around $3.50) and I still feel ripped off. I'll be filing a refund request with Steam because this game isn't worth 3 freaking pennies let alone $3. Version 1.5 Update: I've fixed bugs of statistics. Also I allowed puppets to speak. So now you can hear their irritable voices. And I've fixed something on trifles.. First fixes after release! 3.1.2: I noticed that some players do not understand whether the game is released or not. Officially came out! The game can be played!We found a few bugs, there are small - visual, and hard bugs - make the game impassable.Statistics.
